The First Visit: Consult and Workup Before Sperm Banking

Prior to any intervention to preserve male fertility, there must first be a thorough consultation and evaluation. This evaluation starts with history taking and physical examination to evaluate for medical causes of infertility. This chapter reviews pertinent history questions and physical exam points for the infertile male. This examination can be expanded with semen analysis, evaluation for sexually transmitted infections, hormone analysis, and genetic evaluation. This chapter reviews the proper collection and interpretation of the semen analysis by WHO 2010 criteria. Finally, imaging can augment the evaluation of the potentially infertile male requiring preservation of fertility.
